Japanese tech speech lives between two writing systems. Sometimes you want カタカナ, but often the English word should stay English — “review” as review, not レビュー forced onto a PR comment that everyone reads in English anyway. Generic dictation engines guess, and guess differently every time. Alder routes Japanese to an on-device engine we benchmarked on real Japanese recordings, and it keeps the English words in your Japanese sentences as the words you actually said.
句読点 lands where it belongs — 、and 。— and the English fragments keep their own casing and spacing, so the finished sentence needs no manual repair.
Polished, or word for word — you decide
With cleanup on, えっと and あの disappear, repeated words collapse, and what remains is the sentence you meant. With cleanup off, Alder types every syllable exactly as spoken — nothing removed, nothing smoothed. It’s one switch on the capsule, and it never rewrites your meaning in either mode. Meeting notes verbatim in the morning, polished Slack messages in the afternoon.
Between Japanese and English, natively
Alder also translates on the device. Dictate in English and let it type 日本語 at your cursor, or speak Japanese and send finished English — whichever direction your day needs. There’s no cloud round-trip and no separate app: you speak, and the other language appears where you were typing. Leave it on “Same as Spoken” and translation stays out of your way.
No silent failures
The worst thing a dictation tool can do is lose your words quietly. Alder treats that as a design rule: if the microphone connected but no audio ever arrived — a classic Bluetooth failure — it says so instead of producing an empty result. If your session is interrupted, the recording survives and can be processed on the next launch. If a field blocks insertion, the text stays on the result card, ready to paste. 話した言葉は失われません。
And the privacy boundary is structural, not a policy promise: recognition, cleanup, and translation all run locally. Your voice never leaves the Mac.

- Can Alder handle Japanese mixed with English? 日英混在でも使えますか？ Yes. 「この feature は来週 ship します」 keeps "feature" and "ship" as English words instead of forcing them into katakana or garbling them — mixed speech is a normal case for Alder, not an error.
- Does it produce proper Japanese punctuation? 句読点は正しく入りますか？ Yes — 、and 。where they belong, plus clean casing for the English words in the sentence. Filler like えっと and あの is removed only when cleanup is on; turn it off and Alder types exactly what you said.
- Does dictation work offline? オフラインで動きますか？ Yes, after the one-time model download. Everything — recognition, cleanup, translation — runs on the Mac itself, so your voice never leaves the device.
